Musical Expression & Interpretation | 35% |
Stage Presence & Overall Performance | 20% |
Repertoire & Time Adherence | 10% |
Total | 100% |
🎼 Technique & Accuracy (35%)
This criterion evaluates the pianist’s fundamental technical ability and precision while performing. Judges will look for:
- Note Accuracy: Are the correct notes being played as written in the score, with no added or omitted notes?
- Rhythm and Timing: Is the performance rhythmically accurate, with a steady tempo and well-executed note values?
- Articulation Clarity: Are markings such as staccato, legato, accents, and slurs executed cleanly and effectively?
- Hand Coordination: Is there smooth synchronization between the left and right hands, with evenness and balance?
- Pedal Technique: Is the sustain pedal used tastefully and cleanly, enhancing the sound without blurring harmonies or rhythms?
A high score in this category reflects excellent control of the piano and a faithful realization of the written score.
🎶 Musical Expression & Interpretation (35%)
This category measures the artistic depth and musical sensitivity of the performance. Judges will consider:
- Dynamic Range and Control: Is there expressive use of loud and soft sounds (piano, forte, crescendos, decrescendos) to shape the music?
- Phrasing and Musical Flow: Are the phrases shaped naturally and musically, with appropriate breathing and emphasis?
- Stylistic Understanding: Does the performer demonstrate awareness of the historical and stylistic context of the piece (e.g., Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary)?
- Personal Interpretation: Does the performance show a thoughtful and imaginative interpretation that adds personality while remaining respectful to the composer’s intent?
A strong performance in this area should move the listener emotionally and reflect a deep connection with the music.
🎭 Stage Presence & Overall Performance (20%)
This category reflects how well the performer presents themselves and engages with the audience and judges. It includes:
- Confidence and Poise: Does the performer enter and exit the stage with professionalism? Do they remain composed throughout the performance?
- Body Language and Focus: Is the pianist’s posture appropriate, and do their movements support the music rather than distract from it?
- Audience Connection: Does the performance capture and hold the audience’s attention through expressive playing and performance energy?
- Professionalism: Does the performer show respect for performance etiquette, including bowing, attire, and behavior on stage?
This criterion rewards performers who not only play well, but also deliver a memorable and engaging stage presence.
⏱️ Repertoire and Time Adherence (10%)
This category ensures that participants are following the competition’s guidelines. Judges will assess:
- Repertoire Selection: Is the piece chosen from the approved list, and appropriate for the participant’s age and category?
- Preparedness: Is the piece well-practiced, complete, and ready for performance?
- Time Management: Does the performance fall within the allocated time limit without unnecessary delays or excessive cuts?
Scoring well here shows that the participant has read and followed all instructions carefully and respectfully.
